   TSU to present 3rd Southern history lecture
   The Department of History and the Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at Troy State University will present the third McPherson-Mitchell Lecture Series in Southern History on Tuesday, Oct. 28 beginning at 7 p.m. in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.
   The lecturer for 2003 will be Dr. John Marszalek, William L. Giles Professor of History Emeritus at Mississippi State University since 1973. His topic will be “Presidential Scandals: A Historical and Media View.”
   The lecture, held every two years, honors two former TSU history professors, Dr. Milton McPherson and Dr. Norma Taylor Mitchell.

   His publications include:
  • “Sherman, A Soldier’s Passion for Order (1993), a finalist for the Lincoln Prize and the winner of the non-fiction prizes from the Ohioian Library; “The Petticoat Affair: Manner, Mutiny, and Sex in Andrew Jackson’s White House (1998), winner of the Southeastern Library Association Non-Fiction prize;
  • “Court Martial” (1972), was made into a Showtime motion picture and reissued as a paperback, both under a new title “Assault at West Point” (1994).
       Dr. Marszalek has currently completed a biography of Civil War General Henry W. Halleck to be published by Harvard University Press in 2004.
