Dothan psychiatrist to speak at TSU during ‘Battle of the Blues Week’
Dr. Fay Ferrell, a Dothan psychiatrist, will speak on “Depression: Its Causes and Treatments” Wednesday, Oct. 8 in Trojan Center Ballroom A on the Troy State University campus. Dr. Ferrell’s presentation is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Ferrell, who is in private practice in Dothan and also serves as medical director of SpectraCare in Houston County, will be speaking as a part of “Battle of the Blues Week.” Her presentation is open to the public, and there is no admission charge.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Ferrell coming to campus,” said Fran Scheel, TSU SAVE Project coordinator. “As a counselor myself, I highly respect her wealth of knowledge on mental illnesses and their treatments.”
The SAVE Project, which is short for Sexual Assault and Violence Education, is an on-campus advocacy organization that uses programs, literature and videos to teach women how to avoid or reduce the chances of being physically or sexually assaulted. It also offers counseling and a 24-hour crisis intervention telephone hotline. Scheel said the annual Battle of the Blues Week provides SAVE with the opportunity to educate students about depression and mental illness.
So many Americans today face mental illness,” Scheel said. “College is a stressful environment and we see many students facing depression or anxiety. This week of activities gives us the opportunity to share information with them about depression and mental illness and make them aware of the resources we have here on campus to help.”
