Dual
exhibit at TSU features sculptor Robert Lyon, artist Ann Hubbard
A dual exhibition featuring the works of sculptor Robert Lyon
and his wife, painter Ann Hubbard, is currently on display at Troy State University’s
Malone Gallery of Art.
The exhibit will conclude its six-week run at the gallery with
a reception and lecture for the artists on Thursday, Oct. 2, from 4:30 p.m. to
6:30 p.m. Both events will take place in the gallery and are free of charge.
The public is invited to attend.
According to Jerry Johnson, professor and chairman of the Department
of Art and Design, the show is highly reflective of the artists’ stylistic
influence upon each other.
“They use the same hues and shapes and textures, making
their art similar, despite being in quite different mediums. It’s almost
like Lyon is making a 3-D rendition of his wife’s paintings,” Johnson
said.
Lyon’s clay and wood sculptures are strongly inspired
by nature and focus on man’s interaction with the earth. Hubbard’s
pieces also draw much of their imagery from depictions of the environment and
display a similar sense of texture.
“It’s a great learning tool for our students, to
witness how artists, working in a shared studio space, can affect each other’s
art,” Johnson said.
Lyon and Hubbard are associate professors in the McMaster Department
of Art at the University of South Carolina. Lyon’s work has appeared in
numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the southeastern United States.
Hubbard has also participated in various group exhibitions and was featured in
the Malone Gallery of Art as a solo artist in 1997. In addition to her art, Whitt
has served as a workshop instructor and is a lecturer on fine art topics. Both
artists’ are represented in several public collections.
The Malone Gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through
Friday. For additional information, call (334) 670-3391.
