Johnny Huffman wins McKinley Award at Troy State University
Johnny Huffman, Director of Telecommunications at Troy State University, is the winner of the Vergil Parks McKinley Award for April.
Huffman, who has been employed by TSU since 1989, received the award during a ceremony in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on Wednesday, April 21. Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., Chancellor, presented the award to Huffman, who was nominated by Dr. Bill Flinn, Associate Vice Chancellor for Technology.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university’s athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock and a $350 stipend.
In a letter of nomination, Dr. Flinn described Huffman as “an excellent example of a TSU staff professional who completes major, new projects while attending to crucial on-going responsibilities.”
“When he was called upon to provide key, timely technology infrastructure, he responded with good-natured, team-oriented leadership that is clearly recognized by colleagues and appreciated by TSU students, alumni, faculty and staff,” he said. “Through Mr. Huffman’s friendly demeanor and technical leadership the university can move quickly and completely to become One Great University.”
While accepting the award, Huffman doled out praise to others.
“It’s an honor to receive the award and to get paid for doing something that you love,” Huffman said. “I wouldn’t have received this award without the great staff that we have. I couldn’t do what I do without them. They deserve a lot of credit.”
Huffman lives in Troy with his wife Jimmie.
