Dr. Wagner to deliver first lecture for AISFM at Troy State University
Dr. David “Bucky” Wagner will speak at the inaugural Guest Lecturer Series for the Alabama Institute for Sport and Fitness Management (AISFM) on Thursday, April 15, at 2 p.m. at Troy State University .
The series will be held in the Rane Auditorium of the Davis Field House.
This is the first major event sponsored by the newly formed AISFM, according to Dr. Jason Lee, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology and Health Promotion at TSU, who also serves as director of the institute.
Dr. Lee said AISFM was founded to support existing sports programs and opportunities for both participants and sport and fitness management professionals. Although the institute is based at Troy State University , its advisory board includes administrators from four other universities, prominent physicians and representatives of youth sports such as Dixie Boys Baseball.
“We’re preparing for our first membership drive this fall, and we will be planning an annual conference and other activities,” Dr. Lee said. “We’re pleased that Dr. Wagner agreed to serve as our first speaker in what will be an annual lecture series.”
Wagner served as Georgia Southern University’s Director of Athletics for 14 years. Under his leadership the department saw an increase in departmental budget from $280,000 in 1981 to $4.1 million in 1995. He was a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the College Association of business Managers of Athletics and the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Wagner also served as president of the NCAA Division I-AA Football Athletic Directors Association, an organization he helped create, and was selected as the “Co-Sports Executive of the Year” in 1991 by the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
Wagner currently serves as an associate professor in the Department of Sport Science and Physical Education at GSU and has presented at numerous state, regional and national conferences on subjects related to sport administration .
