Tony Ferrante wins December McKinley Award at Troy University
Tony Ferrante, director of facilities and equipment for the athletics department, is the winner of the Vergil Parks McKinley award for December at Troy University .
Ferrante, who has been a member of the Troy University staff for six years, received the award during the University’s annual holiday luncheon held on Tuesday in the Trojan Center Ballrooms. Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., chancellor of Troy University , presented the award to Ferrante, who was nominated by Scott Farmer, interim director of athletics.
The McKinley Award is the highest honor that Troy University gives to a non-faculty staff member. It is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a Troy University professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university’s athletic program. Winners of this award receive an engraved clock and a $350 stipend.
In a letter of nomination, Farmer called Ferrante the “hardest working member of the Athletics Department.”
“He has a tireless work ethic and, in many cases, a thankless job,” Farmer said of Ferrante. “His duties expanded exponentially with the opening of Movie Gallery Stadium and the press box facility. He hastaken on these responsibilities without missing a beat and with the true Trojan spirit. We are a better athletics department because Tony Ferrante works in it.”
Ferrante, a Troy resident, said he was shocked and extremely honored to receive the award.
“I love my job and I love the people that I work with,” Ferrante said. “It isn’t work to me because I love what I do.”
