Troy State University Play Advances to Regional Competition
   

The Troy State University Department of Speech and Theatre will make its second consecutive trip to the regional competition of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
    Troy State University 's production of the Greek drama “Antigone” has been chosen as one of six plays to be performed at the competition.
    Troy State University will perform “Antigone” during the Region IV festival, Feb. 3-8, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham . The 10-state region is one of eight that compose the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. After reviewing performances from the eight regional competitions, judges from the Kennedy Center will select six to be performed in Washington , D.C. in April at the annual non-competitive national festival.
    “The Kennedy Center festival is an opportunity to showcase the best of collegiate theater,” said Adena Moree , TSU Theatre director and assistant professor of Speech and Theatre. “The invitation to come to the regional festival indicates that your work has been recognized as top quality. We are extremely proud and honored to have this opportunity.”
    TSU first performed “Antigone” for competition at the 2003 Alabama Conference of Theatre of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival held at Jacksonville State University .

    The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, founded in 1969, also offers student artists individual recognition through awards and scholarships in playwriting, acting, criticism, directing and design.
    All shows will be performed twice to accommodate audiences that are expected to exceed seating capacity. TSU's “ Antigone” will be performed Thursday, Feb. 5 , at noon and 8 p.m.  at UAB's Sirote Theatre.
   "Antigone" was written by Sophocles in 440 B.C. and revolves around a Greek woman's devotion to her brother during a time of rebellion and and warfare in ancient Thebes.
   "Antigone will be performed one last time at TSU for the public on Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. and on Feb. 1 at 2:30 in the Trojan Center Theatre. Tickets may be purchased at the door or the Trojan Center Box Office. The two showings will serve as a fundraiser to help with the costs associated with advancing to the regional competition.
