TSU student completes Leading Edge Institute
Betsy Bradshaw, a Troy State University student from Brantley, has completed the three-year program of the Leading Edge Institute, a leadership development program for young women in Alabama .
Bradshaw, a junior chemistry major, participated in graduation exercises in January. Each class of about 35-40 young women learns about different aspects of leadership from corporate executives, elected officials and community activists. The students participate in a week-long Summer Institute and several weekend sessions during the academic year.
“The Leading Edge Institute is designed to broaden our horizons,” Bradshaw said. “We get to observe women in leadership roles.”
One of the most helpful Leading Edge initiatives was a mentor program, Bradshaw said. She chose Melinda Farmer Davis, a TSU graduate from her hometown who is a pharmacist in Montgomery . Bradshaw said she observed Davis at work for several days and developed a strong relationship with her.
“She helped me to better understand her job and how she deals with the public,” Bradshaw said.
