Girls State returning to Troy University campus
Over 334 high school juniors from around the state will be on the Troy University campus June 6-11 to participate in the events of Girls State .
Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and is returning for its fifth year at Troy University . Barbara Patterson, the Director of Student Involvement and Leadership for the University and a Girls State volunteer, said “We want these girls to be good citizens and to be proud of being United States citizens.”
Several events are scheduled such as dividing the girls into political parties and holding elections as well as debating bills and posing solutions to problems that are facing elected officials. The schedule also features presentations from elected officials, political consultants and members of the media.
The highlight of the week is the election of the Governor of Girls State and other constitutional officers.
“It's important for them to be part of the political process,” Patterson said. “The main goal is to encourage civic participation.”
On the last day of events the girls will be taking a trip to Montgomery to take tours of the capital and to meet with Gov. Bob Riley, Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley and several legislators.
In 2000 Troy University became only the second college or university to play host to Girls State in its more than 50-year history.
