Becky Davis wins McKinley Award at Troy State University
Becky Davis, an assistant in the financial aid office at Troy State University is the winner of the Vergil Parks McKinley Award for February.
Davis, who has been employed by TSU for more than 23 years, received the award during a ceremony in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., Chancellor, presented the award to Davis, who was nominated by Angela Johnson and Carol Supri, assistant director and director of Financial Aid.
The McKinley Award, the highest honor that TSU gives to a non-faculty staff member, is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a TSU professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university's athletic program. Award winners receive an engraved clock and a $350 stipend.
In a letter of nomination, Johnson and Supri described Davis as “always willing to do whatever it takes to make sure the students will get their financial aid.”
“She stays late to work on loans to ensure the students get them and has put in so many hours she has not been compensated for,” they said. “She doesn't do it for the compensation; she does it for the students. She puts the students first no matter what.”
Davis said it was an honor to be nominated. “The best part of the job is seeing students come in their first day and seeing them through until they graduate and knowing that you helped to get them to that point,” she said.
Davis and her husband live in Troy. They have two children and four grandchildren.
