Model United Nations to meet at Troy State University
More than 250 area middle school students will attend the Southeast Alabama Model United Nations(SAMUN) at Troy State University March 11-12.
The model United Nations will include sixth-eighth grade students from Troy , Ozark, New Brockton, Zion Chapel, Kinston , Dothan , Abbeville, Greenville and Brewton. Each delegation of five to seven students will select a country, research it and develop a resolution. The resolutions will be presented in committees, and if the resolution passes in committee, students will then present it to the General Assembly. Students dress in the clothing of their representative country, prepare an introduction in that country's native language and design a flag of that country.
The General Assembly is made up of approximately 250 middle school students and is presided over by officers, a select group of ninth graders who are previous model United Nations participants.
“Students learn communication, compromise and consensus building skills, as well as insight into relationships between the U.S. and other countries,” said Terry White, Program Development Specialist at TSU. “Students gain knowledge of other nations' history, cultural traditions, national interests and international policies. It's a time when they can make new friends from other schools and communities, have fun and fellowship. It's a good time with a purpose.”
TSU has played host to this event for the last nine years. For more information contact the In-service/Continuing Education Center at (334) 670-3495.
