University students part of detachment to middle East |
When the Army National Guard 3rd Battalion
117th Field Artillery deploys this week for its eventual
assignment in
Iraq
,
the
Troy
University
student
body will be well represented.
At least nine current
Troy
University
students
were in uniform Tuesday morning for a deployment ceremony at Movie Gallery Veterans
Stadium. The unit, which is based in
Troy
,
is scheduled to train at
Camp Shelby
,
Miss.
,
prior to assignment as a security force in support of the U.S.-led coalition
force in
Iraq
.
More than 300 people
attended the deployment ceremony Tuesday, which featured remarks from several
National Guard officers and Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford.
Troy
University
students
deployed this week included Danny Barron, Jackson Bassett and Andrew Reeves of
Troy, Ashley Boutwell, Randall Dodd and Jerry Dubose of
Elba
,
William McGowan of
Enterprise
, Nia
Diggs-Evans of
Dothan
and Christopher
Minton of
Marion
.
Herbert Reeves, dean
of student services, said this latest deployment brings to about 20 the number
of students who have left the
Troy
campus
this semester because their National Guard or Reserve units have been deployed.
He explained that when students are forced to leave school to fulfill a military
obligation, they are given a full refund for the semester.
“We try to
be as helpful with the students who are deployed as we can,” Reeves said.
But not all of the
Troy
University
students
who have been activated are enrolled on the Troy Campus, as students at the
Dothan
,
Montgomery
and
Phenix
City
campuses have been called to duty as well.
In addition, many
of the students in the
University
College
division,
which operates all
Troy
University
’s
teaching sites outside
Alabama
,
are active military personnel and have been deployed to the
Middle
East
.
