Battle of Blues week begins Oct. 4 at Troy University
Troy University ’s Battle of the Blues week, held in conjunction with National Depression Awareness Week, is scheduled for Oct. 4-7, according to Fran Scheel, personal counseling coordinator and SAVE project coordinator.
“This is a great opportunity for students to take charge of their mental health and seek help if they are concerned that they may have symptoms of depression or other mental health issues,” Scheel said.
The first event of the week is a showing of the movie Girl Interrupted at Claudia Crosby at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 4. The 1999 movie, starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie, is based on a book by Susanna Kaysen about the true story of her 18 months in psychiatric treatment.
“Clues for the Collegiate Blues,” a panel discussion, will be held Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 1:30 in Trojan Center Ballroom A to allow students, faculty and staff the opportunity to meet Scheel, Christopher Smith and Jenny Duncan, personal counselors at Troy University .  The audience will be encouraged to participate in the discussion by asking questions and providing feedback.
Students are invited to participate in free mental health screenings on Oct. 6-7 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the counseling services office located in Trojan Center 215.
Student Development and Counseling Services are offering these screenings, which will take about 5-15 minutes to complete, in order to heighten the awareness of mental health problems and treatments.  Personal counselors will be available to interpret scores from the screenings and talk to students about possible treatment options, if needed.
For more information, contact the personal counseling and SAVE project office at 670-3700.
