Student’s Work Published on

As a third grader at
Plain
Elementary School
in
Simpsonville
,
South Carolina
,
Allison Lane
could not get enough
of the R.M.S. Titanic books written by Robert Ballard. Today,
as a senior at
Troy
University
,
Lane has discovered that her long-time enthusiasm and research
of the Titanic has paid off.
Lane recently had
a research paper on the Titanic, originally assigned to her by
TROY
history professor Dr. Bryant Shaw last spring, published
on the website of Encyclopedia Titanica. The site came on line in 1996
and offers the latest research concerning the Titanic, including biographies
of passengers and crew members and articles by leading historians.
A member of the “Encyclopedia
Titanica” Website Message Board for the past four years, Lane learned she
could submit her paper with the chance of it being published online. After
receiving encouragement from Dr. Shaw, Lane submitted her paper, and within a
matter of days had her work was published on the site.
Lane said she received
positive feedback on her composition from fellow message board members, including
the encouragement from one respected message board member to consider turning
her paper into a book project in the future.
Lane’s research
paper examines the catastrophic sinking of the Titanic. She describes the ship
and its’ importance before it set off, the problems that arose leading
to the accident and the precautions that were taken by both America and England
to prevent further misfortunes of this kind.
Lane, the daughter
of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Lane
, is a history
major with a minor in anthropology. She has been a member of
Troy
University
’s Sound of the South Marching
Band, Symphony Band, History Club and Anthropology Club. After graduation
next of next year, Lane is interested in pursuing some type of museum work.
Lane’s research
paper is available for viewing at the following web address: http://www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/item.php/3620.html.
