– The Troy University Rodeo program will present the Little Spurs Rodeo on Aug. 27 in an effort to spur interest and lasso support for the sport and the program.
The rodeo, which is open to ages 2 through 14, will be held at the Pike County Cattleman’s Complex on U.S. 231 South in Troy and will include events for children of any knowledge or skill level, according to TROY Rodeo Coach Cliff Toliver. The 22 events will include stick horse and Tonka truck races for the younger, inexperienced children and riding and roping events for those more experienced in competitive rodeo.
An entry fee of $7 per an event will be charged and awards will be given in each event. The rodeo will begin at 10 a.m., however, those wishing to participate should arrive early to register.
“There really will be something that all children would find fun and entertaining, regardless of their experience or skill level,” Toliver said. “We are trying to build a base of young people who are interested in rodeo and at the same time raise some money to support the
Troy
University
rodeo program.”
Toliver said the event has attracted interest from the local area, as well as
Georgia
,
Tennessee
and
Mississippi
.
“This began as a local event, but we have gotten a lot of interest from other areas as well,” Toliver said. “We believe this will be a positive event for our program, our university and the
Troy
area.”
The Trojans rodeo team ended its third season of competition in June with its first-ever trip to the Collegiate Finals National Rodeo in
Casper
,
Wyo.
