TROY, Ala.—Kathy Devlin, an evaluator and analyst in the Office of Admissions at Troy University, is the winner of the University’s Vergil Parks McKinley Award for November.
Devlin, who has been a member of the Troy University staff at its Phenix City Campus since 1981, received the award during a ceremony in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on the Troy Campus on Wednesday. Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., chancellor, presented the award to Devlin. Darlene Schmurr-Stewart, director of student services and associate registrar on the Phenix City Campus, nominated Devlin for the award.
The McKinley Award is the highest honor that Troy University gives to a non-faculty staff member. It is presented monthly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by former Texaco CEO John McKinley in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a Troy University professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the university’s athletic program. Winners of this award receive an engraved clock and a $350 stipend.
In a letter of nomination, Schmurr-Stewart called Devlin a “highly skilled” and hard working employee.
“Kathy is known first and foremost for her helpful, friendly attitude toward faculty and students,” the letter of nomination said. “She is highly skilled with various technologies and has responsibility for the course schedule section creation and coordination of the degree audit functions at the campus level, among many other tasks in the admissions arena. She also coordinates all of the student participation during commencement activities.”
Devlin, a TROY alumna, earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1979 and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree at the University.
“This is a great honor to receive this award and this recognition,” Devlin said.
Devlin makes her home in Phenix City with her husband, Larry. The couple has a son, Dave.
