Troy University will host nearly 300 Excellence in Leadership Scholarship applicants from 191 high schools in nine states Feb. 10 on the Troy Campus.
This year’s Excellence in Leadership Scholarship Day will see the largest number of applicants for the University’s scholarship since its inception three decades ago as the George Wallace Leadership Scholarship, according to Heather Dykema, the event’s coordinator and TROY admission counselor.
“I believe it’s the largest pool of applicants we have ever had. More than 300 applied for these scholarships, and 276 were actually invited to attend,” she said.
Leadership scholarships are based upon achievement in leadership positions in high school and junior or community college. Selection is generally based on an overall evaluation of the student's accomplishments by the committee, but must have a 3.0 grade point average and have scored at least 22 on the ACT or 1030 on the SAT college entrance exams. Recipients also agree to serve three hours per week in a Leadership Intern position.
“The Leadership Scholarship is unique in the fact that it is the University’s only competitive-based institutional scholarship. Awards are based on student activities, grade point average, test scores and an interview with Troy University faculty or staff,” Dykema said. “This scholarship program is a catalyst for these recipients to realize their leadership potential while in college.”
We generally try to give every student that’s eligible something, but awards are all based on the student’s activities,” Dykema said. “The students with the most activities demonstrating leadership get the most money.”
Multiple students from the same high school can be awarded the scholarship. Awards for the scholarship vary in dollar amount. The deadline to apply was Jan. 15.
In addition to faculty interviews, students will meet Chancellor Jack Hawkins, attend a luncheon and meet with Excellence in Leadership Scholars
