TROY
– The American Bandmasters Association has honored
Troy
University
classics professor Dr. Peter Howard with the
ABA
’s Edwin Franko Goldman Memorial Citation.
The award, named for
ABA
’s founder and director of the Goldman Band, recognizes distinguished contributions in the interest of bands and band music in
America
. It was presented to Howard at the
ABA
’s annual meeting in
Gainesville
.
“Bands have been an integral part of our family’s life,” said Howard. “I am fortunate to have spent my entire career teaching at a university that has such a rich tradition and commitment to band music. I’m just glad that I have been able to make a small contribution to that tradition.”
Howard was nominated for the award by Dr. John M. Long, professor emeritus of music at
TROY
and the
ABA
’s past president. He was nominated for his nearly three decades of service as associate editor of the Journal of Band Research, an international scholarly journal published by the Troy State University Press.
Howard’s roots in band music began in the early 1960s as a member of
Montgomery
’s Robert E. Lee High School Band. He went on to play cornet in the
University
of
Alabama
’s Million Dollar Band and has served as president of the TSU Alumni Band.
Other notable recipients of the Goldman Citation include Meredith Wilson, composer of The Music Man, trumpeter Doc Severinson, former President Bill Clinton and the late Ralph Wyatt Adams, former chancellor of
Troy
State
University
.
