Irish eyes will be smiling on Monday, March 14, as the Troy Arts Council presents the music of
The Irish Sopranos
, with special guest Hal Roach, at
Troy
University
. The concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Claudia Crosby Theatre on the Troy Campus.
The concert coincides with
Troy
University
’s fifth annual Irish Week activities, which include an Irish cooking contest, a Pot of Gold search and a St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The Irish Sopranos
are a young, new Irish vocal trio that brings a new modern twist to the standard, classical Irish songs. The program will feature numbers from such genres as classical, operatic, Irish and musical theatre and will offer something for everyone.
The group, made up of Wendy Dwyer, Kay Lynch and Deidre Masterson, captivate their audiences with their unique sound featuring innovative three-part harmonies.
Dwyer, a native of
Cork
,
Ireland
, toured with the renowned Bunratty singers before joining the group. She has performed with Opera Ireland in productions of Puccinni’s
Madame Butterfly, Verdi’s Aida
and the Irish premiere of
Macbeth of Misensk
.
Lynch, originally of
Kerry
,
Ireland
, earned a degree in communications from
Dublin
City
University
. She recently sang the title role on the showcase recording of
Princess Diana
, the musical and has appeared on television shows such as
The Late Late Show, Open House
and
The Rose of Tralee
. Lynch also has a solo album entitled
Unconditional
, which combines classical style vocals with modern dance rhythms.
Masterson, a native of Gorey,
County Wexford
,
Ireland
, began her performing at the age of 12 at the Wexford Festival. From this performance, Masterson won a scholarship to study opera, music and drama at the Leinster Opera Studio in
Dublin
, She is currently preparing her debut album and for an overseas tour.
Hal Roach will be appearing as a special guest of the group. Roach has been the star of
Jury’s Irish Cabaret
in
Dublin
for more than 20 years. In his career, he has entertained five
U.S.
presidents and was described by the late Princess of Monaco as one of the jewels of the Emerald Isle.
Tickets for the concert will be $20 for adults and $10 for students. Discounted tickets for groups of 10 or more are available at $10 for adults and $5 for students.
