TROY – Troy children living in public housing will find the Troy Housing Authority Family Life Center’s library freshly stocked with popular and educational reading materials and computer software.
Through to the efforts of Troy University student Rachelle Toomey, a senior social work major from Enterprise and member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, a $1,000 literacy grant was awarded by the honor society.
Funds from the grant was used to purchase books and software Toomey said will benefit the more than 50 children a day who use the center.
“I’m excited that some of the software includes an ACT prep for high-school students, and the grant money also purchased anti-virus protection for the computers,” Toomey said.
Shelby Tuck, the center’s director, said the children range in age from 5 to 16.
“This will add to the adventures for kids and better prepare them for the future,” he said.
Tuck said the ACT prep software will be put to use immediately in tutoring sessions for students who wish to attend college.
