TROY – Alabama’s state theater festival will be held at Troy University Oct. 29, a venue change thanks to Hurricane Katrina.
“We’re proud to be hosting the festival,” said Troy’s Director of Theatre Adena Moree. “Although it will be a bit scaled-down as a result of the last minute relocation, it will still be an extremely important event for the students.”
The festival for university theater students, originally scheduled for Mobile, was relocated to Troy due to on-going storm cleanup, Moree said. About 200 students from universities in Alabama and four other states will attend the conference.
The main event that will be taking place is the Southeastern Theater Conference screening auditions. This will be an all-day event that provides theater students with the opportunity to do a one-minute monologue and a 90-second song. The highest scorers from this event will move on to the Southeastern Theater Conference. Moree said about 40 slots would be up for grabs from the auditions.
Another event that will take place in the afternoon is the ten-minute play festival. About 10 universities will be participating in this event, including two entries from Troy University. The 10-minute plays are open to public and will be held in the Trojan Center Theatre. [[TIME]]
Other events to take place are a planning meeting for theater directors to determine the direction of events for the upcoming year. The day will conclude with the Alabama Conference of Theater awards dinner.
