TROY – The Troy University chapter of the National Broadcasting Society came home with two major awards after attending the National Broadcasting Society’s National Convention in Washington, D.C., March 15-19.
The TROYchapter was awarded Model Chapter and also received the Most Improved Chapter of the Year Award at the convention.
“The NBS is made up of 79 chapters nationwide from New York to California. Only seven of those chapters were named Model Chapters of the Year,” said Dr. Jeff Spurlock, assistant professor of journalism and TROY’s NBS advisor.
Spurlock said to qualify for Model Chapter status, a chapter must meet at least 80 percent of the model chapter criteria. This includes having broadcast professionals speak at chapter meetings, conducting fundraisers throughout the year, staying in constant contact with the national office and having a significant increased in membership from the previous year.
“To receive the prestigious honor of being named Most Improved Chapter of the Year, a chapter may not have received Model Chapter status the previous year and must show all the contributions it has made to stand up among the best chapters in the country. Needless to say, we are very excited,” said Spurlock.
Eight TROY students attended the convention along with Dr. Spurlock. They were: Daniel Curtis, a junior from Dauphin Island; Josh Gauntt, a sophomore from Smiths Station; Anna Hasenbein, a junior from Troy; Christie Hegwood, a senior from Dothan; Lindsay Johnson, a senior from Luverne; Erica Proffer, a senior from Newville; Jonathan Sellers, a junior from Mobile, and Jessica Weaver, a senior from Brantely.
