Troy physician appointed to expanded role at Troy University

TROY – Troy physician Dr. Peter M. “Mickey” DiChiara will assume expanded duties at Troy University.

“Dr. DiChiara is a long-standing Trojan fan and has served both the University and our community well as a physician for many years,” said Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr. “We welcome him to his expanded role in our sports medicine and athletic programs. His dedication and caring lends a new level of service to our students and student athletes.

Under the agreement, which expands his long-standing service as university physician, Dr. DiChiara will assume some of the duties of Dr. James Whiteside, who retired last month.

“I look forward to learning a lot from Chuck Ash and the athletic training staff,” Dr. DiChiara said.

Those expanded duties include serving as team doctor and medical consultant for the University’s athletic training and sports medicine program, according to Dr. John Schmidt, senior vice chancellor for student services.

Schmidt said in his expanded role, Dr. DiChiara will travel with the football team and will be on-hand for all home basketball games, as required by National College Athletic Association regulations.

Jon E. Adams, PA-C, ATC, will be assisting Dr. DiChiara in all aspects of the athletic medicine venture. Adams, a physician assistant and certified athletic trainer, served as associate athletic trainer at the University from 1991-1996. Since 1998, the 1990 TROY graduate has volunteered his time and expertise to the University and has served as a liaison between Pike Internal Medicine and the athletic department.

“I am very excited to be a full-time team clinician with the athletic training and sports medicine department again,” Adams said. “I know the subtle ways athletes and coaches need to be treated and the main goal of the athletic medical team of getting the athletes back on the field as soon and safe as possible. Dr. DiChiara, Chuck Ash and I work very closely to achieve the best possible outcomes for our players.”

Dr. DiChiara’s private practice at Pike Internal Medicine is expected to continue without interruption.
