DOTHAN – Alabama has the highest obesity rate in the nation, according to state health officials; and obesity is the most common disease in the Dothan area. With help from Troy University, learn lifesaving strategies to combat the problem.
The Troy University Continuing Education Center will conduct a seminar on Obesity Management March 1, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The workshop, which will be held on the Dothan Campus, is open to nurses (RN/LPN), social workers, dietary personnel, pharmacists, extension agents, health educators and the general public. During the seminar, Dr. Habiba Shaw will provide current information and strategies essential for assessment and treatment of overweight and obese patients.
“Obesity now accounts for more deaths and chronic disorders, and poorer health-related qualities of life,” Shaw said, “than either smoking or problem drinking.”
According to 2003 Alabama Center for Health statistics, nearly one quarter of adults in Alabama are morbidly obese, and approximately 37 percent are overweight. Obesity has been identified as a risk factor in illnesses including cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, gallbladder disease, liver disease, gout, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, gastrointestinal disorders, endometrial cancer, breast and gallbladder cancer, infertility, depression, pregnancy complications and hormone abnormalities.
The workshop will detail a step-by-step approach that includes self-assessment, estimating calories needed for desirable body weight, understanding Body Mass Index (BMI), setting personal goals, following a balanced diet and dealing with Lapse and Relapse.
Upon completion of training, participants will be able to set realistic goals for losing and keeping weight off. They will also learn to eat healthier foods in reasonable portions, increase physical activity and reduce diabetes complications and the risk of stroke and heart disease.
