Spring concerts showcase vocal talents at TROY

TROY – TROY University will be hosting a variety of choral concerts throughout the spring semester.

The Choral Masterwork Festival will be March 11 at 7:30 p.m. and March 12 at 3 p.m. at the TROY Montgomery Campus’ Davis Theatre.

This festival features professional, community, and student singers and instrumentalists in recreating Creation, by the classical composer Franz Joseph Hayden, who is a contemporary of Mozart and Beethoven.

The music of this festival is upbeat, optimistic, and humorous, as well as beautiful. Admission to the festival is $15 for adults and $5 for students.

In contrast to the large performing forces of the Choral Masterwork Festival, the Choral Chamber Concert will be April 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on the Troy Campus.

The Chamber Concert is under the direction of Dr. Diane Orlofsky, conductor of the Chamber Choir, which according to Dr. Orlofsky is “traditionally, mixed vocal chamber groups that is on the small side and focus on the SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) literature.”

“We will be performing a smorgasbord of different types of chamber pieces and a couple of pieces that are usually performed with a slightly larger group,” said Orlofsky.

Admission to the Choral Chamber Concert is free and early arrival is highly recommended.

In addition to the spring choral concerts is the Gospel Singers Concert on April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Sorrell Chapel.

This auditioned ensemble specializes in sacred music from the African-American experience and will be performed under TROY adjunct faculty Lewis Webb, which will help in his fulfillment of work towards his Master degree in Choral Conducting.

Additional music by Mozart and other composers will give added depth to this performance. Admission to the Gospel Concert is free and arriving early to get a seat is strongly suggested.

The final concert of the spring will be the POPS! Extravaganza concert April 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Crosby Theatre.

This new annual event will celebrate the world of music through the theme “Music Through the Decades.”

The songs will range from hits of the 40s up to contemporary movie music, which will be performed by the Collegiate Singers, Dazzlers! Show Choir, Chamber Choir and the Women’s Madrigals.

The use of colorful dress, costumes, student soloists, and a jazz band will  add impact to this favorite concert.

Admission to the POPS! Extravaganza is free. For more information on the Spring Choral concerts, contact the J.M Long School of music at 334-670-3281.
