MUSICAL COMEDY HIT TO PERFORM ON VALENTINE'S DAY

Montgomery, Ala.  Mame, a musical comedy hit from Broadway’s golden age, will be performed at Troy University’s Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts for one evening only on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14 beginning at 7 p.m.  This production is co-sponsored by the Historic Capitol Inn and WSFA 12.

Set against the backdrop of the New York society scene in 1928, Mame tells the story of Mame Dennis, who takes over the rearing of her orphaned nephew Patrick and turns his life into a series of fantastic and funny adventures.  The Jerry Herman score features familiar songs such as “We Need a Little Christmas,” “Mame,” “Best Girl” and “If He Walked Into My Life.”

Mame is based on the Patrick Dennis novel, Auntie Mame.  The original Broadway production opened on May 24, 1966, at the Winter Garden Theatre and ran for 1,508 performances.  In the original production, Angela Lansbury served in the starring role as Mame and Bea Arthur played her friend Vera Charles. Both Lansbury and Arthur won Tony Awards for their work. A later film version cast Lucille Ball as the high-spirited Mame.

Mame is presented as a part of the 2005-2006 Subscriber Series for Troy University’s Davis Theatre.  Single tickets are now available for purchase and range in price from $15 to $40.  For more information regarding ticket availability, call the theatre at (334) 241-9567.  Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. – Noon.  All productions for the 10th Annual Season Subscriber Series are presented in Troy University’s Davis Theatre, which is located in downtown Montgomery at 251 Montgomery Street, and have a 7 p.m. curtain time unless noted.
