TROY – Troy University’s MathFest 2006, a one day undergraduate mathematics conference that will mathematic students from seven universities in Alabama and Tennessee, is slated for March 4.
The purpose of the conference is to have a common mathematics forum for all students and faculty at colleges and universities, said Dr. Ken Roblee, a mathematics professor at TROY and coordinator of the event. Faculty, undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to give presentations in all areas of mathematics, including its applications, history and education.
The conference will consist of 20 minute lectures, a one-hour special lecture, a graduate school information booth, the fourth annual calculus competition for undergraduates, including lunch and refreshments for all participants.
In addition to at least 50 students, this year’s MathFest will host Dr. Atif Abueida as guest speaker. Abueida joined the faculty at the University of Dayton (Ohio) in 2000, after earning his doctorate at Auburn University. He earned a masters degree from East Tennessee State University in 1996 and a bachelors degree from U.A.E. University (United Arab Emirates). He taught high school for eight years before earning his doctorate.
Atif’s research interests are in the areas of graph theory, design theory, and complex analysis. He has also conducted a summer workshop "Critical Thinking and Problem Solving with Discrete Mathematics", a Discrete Math Leadership Institute for K-8th Grade Teachers to work with teachers in the Dayton City area.
