Troy University to host Alabama Academy of Science meeting
   

TROY—Scientists from across Alabama will visit Troy University March 15-18 for the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Alabama Academy of Science.

The meeting will feature symposia on a wide variety of topics in all fields of scientific research, plus the presentation of academic papers by more than 100 university students and faculty members. There will also be a public symposium entitled Canaries in the Environment: Nature’s Monitors of Global Change” scheduled for Friday, March 17, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until noon in the Claudia Crosby Theater. In addition, the Alabama Junior Academy of Science, consisting of high school science clubs and their teacher-sponsors, will hold its annual meeting and scholarship competition in conjunction with the AAS event.

A highlight of the meeting is the joint Alabama Junior Academy of Science/Alabama Academy of Science banquet, scheduled for Friday, March 17, at the Trojan Center Ballrooms. Dr. Paul Michael Stewart,

ALFA Eminent Scholar, Biology and Environmental Sciences at Troy University, will be the keynote speaker. His topic will be “sustainable development.”

“This is the first meeting of the Alabama Academy of Science at Troy University in more than 25 years,” said Dr. Kenneth Sundberg, assistant professor of chemistry at Troy University and chair of the local arrangements committee. “This is an important event for scientists and science educators from across this state and we are honored to have the Alabama Academy of Science in Troy.”
