TROY – Cheron N. Hunter, an Opelika city school teacher, has been awarded the Troy University African-American Fellowship.

“The professors and students I encountered at TROY encouraged and inspired me to pursue a doctorate in education,” said Hunter

The purpose of the program is to recruit and support African-American graduates who are completing a master’s degree program leading to a doctoral degree and who want to teach on the TROY campus. 

“TROY’s graduates are top leaders, educators and all-around great people whose impact span the globe and I am privileged to be a part of this family,” she said.

Hunter is currently a second-grade teacher at Southview Primary School in Opelika City Schools. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in elementary education from Auburn University. Hunter received an education specialist degree in elementary education from Troy University in Phenix City. She also attended Troy University in Phenix City to obtain an Education Leadership Certification endorsement. 

“The University is thrilled to have Mrs. Hunter become our doctoral fellow for 2005-2006. She is a respected and highly talented teacher with the Opelika School System who will bring this expertise to TROY. She is exactly the person we need to assist in preparing our next generation of elementary reading teachers,” said Dr. Dianne Barron, associate provost and dean of TROY’s Graduate School.”

“Mrs. Hunter is now in her second semester of a very rigorous doctoral program in reading education.  I look forward to her joining the ranks of our faculty upon her graduation,” she said.
