TROY – Troy University’s Department of Art and Design is hosting an exhibit of the paintings of Gerald Cournoyer in the Malone Gallery in Malone Hall, March 13 thru April 5.

Cournoyer is an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He received degrees from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1995, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1998 from the University of South Dakota, a Master of Art from the University of South Dakota in 1999 and completed his master of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Oklahoma in Norman in 2004.

“My paintings are a reflection of my culture in the use of the geometric beadwork and quillwork designs. These designs were assigned with meaning when the person saw them in a dream or vision. The designs for me represent life on earth and the after life,” said Cournoyer.

On April 5, Cournoyer will give a lecture and a demo of his unique painting style and technique.

“Gerald brings a different vision and way of looking at life. He grew up on the Indian Reservations in South Dakota with a very different culture to what our students at TROY are familiar with,” said Greg Skaggs, assistant professor of art and coordinator of the exhibit.
