Four claim prizes in TROY’s High School Solo Trumpet Competition

TROY – Four Alabama high school trumpet players have earned accolades in the 7th Annual Troy University High School Solo Trumpet Competition, sponsored by the John M. Long School of Music on March 28.

Ashton Jones, of Scottsboro High School, took the top honor, earning a $3,000 per year scholarship to TROY, and an invitation to join the TROY Ensemble as a soloist. Jones performed “Concert Etude” by Alexander Goedicke.

“This is the second time Ashton has won our High School Solo Competition,” said Dr. James Zingara, a TROY music professor who coordinates the competition. “She performed with great poise and a very mature, musical style and approach. She demonstrated very advanced musical skills in a winning performance.”

Taking second place, and a $1,500 per year TROY scholarship, was Lee Hughes Jr., of Mobile’s Murphy High School. Hughes performed Hebert L. Clarke’s “Bride of the Waves.”

Earning a third place honor was Geneva High School senior Stanley Lawton, who earned a $1,000 scholarship for his performance of “Concert Etude” by Alexander Goedicke.

Jose Flores, a senior at Daleville High School, earned an honorable mention for his performance.

Zingara said each of the winners will become members of the Sound of the South March Band in the fall.

“They represent a very bright future for our programs,” Dr. Zingara said.
