TROY – Students in Troy University’s Risk Management and Insurance Program will spend the summer gaining specialized training and some will study at Lloyd’s of London.
“There was a great deal of competition for these internships from some very impressive universities,” said Dr. Carol Jordan, TROY’s eminent scholar in risk management and director of the Sorrell College of Business’ RMI program. “What a learning experience these will be for our students.”
Five students will travel to London May 12-26 to study insurance practices at Lloyd’s of London, the world’s premier specialty lines insurance market.
Students invited to study at Lloyd’s are Katie Lyons, a TROY graduate from Birmingham who is seeking a certification in Risk Management & Insurance, Brittany Thompson, a junior from Jack, Trent Cox, a TROY graduate from Opelika who is seeking a certification in Risk Management & Insurance, Justin Evans, a junior from Deatsville, and Dianne Henderson, a junior from Troy.
The five will have busy summers, and they will also complete paid internships from June 1 – Aug. 1, Jordan said.
Lyons will intern in New York City with the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices member company. NAPSLO is a trade association representing the surplus lines industry and the wholesale insurance marketing system.
Thompson will also intern with a NAPSLO member company in Chicago.
Cox will intern with All Risks in Jupiter, Fla., and Evans will intern in All Risk’s Tampa, Fla. office.
Henderson will spend her summer in Metairie, La. with Peachtree Brokers, and RMI student John Bynum, a junior from Helena, will work in Peachtree’s Auburn office.
In addition, students Rebecca Allen, a senior from Luverne, will intern with Auto-Owners Insurance in Montgomery, Jacquelene Jacobs, a junior from Ashton, Ill., will intern with Carpenter Insurance in Luverne, and Taylor McGuire, a junior from Elba, will intern with Edison Insurance Group in St. Petersburg, Fla.
TROY’s RMI program is one of only two in the nation that offers “Surplus Lines and Reinsurance” and “Insurance Accounting” in its degree and certification programs. The program is designed to give graduates an educational foundation for careers in identifying and dealing with personal and corporate risk issues, employee benefit programs, personal property and liability and insurance operations, regulation and the insurance marketplace.
