TROY names new international student services dean in reorganization

TROY, Ala. – Darlene Schmurr-Stewart has been named dean of international student services at Troy University in an effort to enhance opportunities offered by the University to its international students.

Schmurr-Stewart’s appointment is one part of a reorganization of University College, the arm that directs operations of the University’s campuses and sites outside the state of Alabama and also oversees the Center for International Programs on the Troy Campus.

“The reorganization copes with the significant growth of international students on the Troy Campus,” said Dr. Curtis Porter, associate vice chancellor for international affairs.

“It also helps us to make TROY’s international programs a two-way street with increased opportunities and support for TROY students wishing to augment their education with studying abroad,” he said.

Schmurr-Stewart has, most recently, served the University as dean of student services on the Phenix City Campus – a role she has filled since joining the University in 2001. Prior to her affiliation with TROY, she was associate registrar at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Ill. and was registrar at Bethany Theological Seminary in Oak Brook, Ill.

She holds a master of business administration degree from Troy University and completed her undergraduate studies at Bethel College in North Newton, Kan.

Porter said Schmurr-Stewart’s shift, along with the addition of a study abroad director, an international recruiter and additional international student advisors, helps position TROY as leader in international education.

“This is part of Troy University’s commitment to emerge as a leading international university and prepare students – both international and domestic – to compete in a global  marketplace,” he said.

Through University College, TROY operates 59 sites in 16 U.S. states, 12 countries and one U.S. territory.
