PHENIX CITY – For 47 six to 12 year olds in Phenix City, Troy University will bolster their summer plans through a special camp that begins Monday, June 4.
Created for the Phenix City Housing Authority After School Program, the seven-week camp is an agricultural themed tutoring program that features Friday field trips.
Monday through Thursday Troy University education students will provide tutoring to children based on individual needs identified through standardized test scores. TROY education students will gain clinical field experience credit for the instruction, said Tessa Brown, assistant to the campus vice chancellor.
On field days, the children will visit a fisheries complex, a 2,000-acre tree farm, a beef cattle operation, a row crop plantation, a large-animal hospital and a dairy.
At the completion of the camp, participants will receive certificates and bookbags filled with school supplies. A special Farm Carnival, complete with hayrides, games, carnival fare and agricultural demonstrations will be hosted on the campus.
