Troy University administrator tapped for national committee

TROY – A Troy University financial aid administrator has been named to a national committee of the National Association of Financial Aid Administrators.

Fred Carter, associate vice chancellor for financial aid, was named to the research committee on June 11 for two years, including a one-year stint as committee chairman in 2008-2009.

While on the committee, Carter will promote and facilitate student aid research, identify and provide training for aid administrators interested in conducting research and to coordinate research on the student aid profession as well as promote the publication and use of research results.

“I have a lot of experience working with ‘need-based institutional’ financial aid at other universities,” said Carter, who began as associate vice chancellor for financial aid in 2003. “It’s nice to have that experience recognized by NASFAA.”

Carter said that his goal at TROY is to raise funds for excellent students who have financial need.

Under Carter’s leadership, the University’s Financial Aid team awarded $246.5 million in student assistance in 2005-2006 to 33,593 students, up from $233.7 million the previous academic year. Since the 2001-2002 academic year, student aid disbursements at the University have more than doubled.

Founded in 1966, NASFAA is a nonprofit membership organization that represents more than 10,000 financial aid professionals at nearly 3,000 colleges, universities and career schools across the country. It is the largest postsecondary education association with institutional membership in Washington, D.C. and is the only national association with a primary focus on student aid legislation, regulatory analysis and professional development for financial aid administrators.
