TROY, Ala.— ICON President Larry J. Hughes will be honored Saturday, March 10, with Troy University’s Eighth Annual Distinguished Leadership Award.
Hughes, a TROY graduate and Montgomery resident, will receive the award from Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. at the annual Alumni Reunion Dinner beginning at 7 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by “The Fabulous Shades” band. “I am humbled and honored to be awarded this prestigious award from my beloved university,” said Hughes.
Troy University recognizes alumni leaders each year with the Distinguished Leadership Award who are committed to working hard for their alma mater and who go the extra mile in either their careers, public service or devotion to Troy University, said Faith Ward, director of alumni affairs.
“This award will be given to Larry Hughes for his exemplary dedication, service and love for the university,” she said.
Hughes has been president of ICON since 1995. Hughes previously served as vice president of Modaphis Physician Services Corporation, vice president and co-owner of Medical Management, vice president and controller of St. Margaret’s Hospital, assistant director of business services for Baptist Medical Center and assistant administrator for Regional Medical Center.
Hughes has successfully grown Medical Management into a regional operation with offices in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee and North Carolina. In 1995, Medical Management merged with the largest such company in the United States, Modaphis Physicians Services Corporation of Atlanta.
In addition to receiving his bachelor and masters degrees from TROY, Hughes is a graduate of Auburn University and American Consultants Institute.
He is married to the former Joanne Jordan. The couple has two children, Josh Hughes, a 2006 Troy graduate, and Jay, his wife Ashley and daughter Natalie Erin Hughes.
Past winners of the Distinguished Leadership Award are: Alabama Attorney General Troy King; former Congressman Earl Hutto; McDowell Lee, secretary of the Alabama Senate; Bob Howell, longtime television reporter and anchor; the late Earl Watson, former TROY athletic director; Harrel McKinney, founder of Alabama Reference Laboratories and sponsor of the McKinney Medical Technology Scholarship at Troy University; and, Earl Johnson, former Andalusia mayor and the driving force behind the Bibb Graves Quadrangle renovation project.
