TROY host first-ever Relay for Life event on campus

TROY – Troy University’s Relay for Life chapter will host its first-ever 24-hour event from 3 p.m. until 3 a.m. March 31.

The event will take place on the band practice field on Collegedale Street.

According to Lauren Edwards, a senior biology major from Eufaula, who is chairing the event, the University’s Relay for Life is aimed at providing a chance for students and faculty to get involved with the American Cancer Society-sponsored event.

“The Relay hosted by the city is huge, but it’s in May when we’re out of school,” she said. “We’re trying to base the University’s Relay on students and faculty so they can get involved and have teams.”

Entertainment at the March 31 event will begin at 3 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. followed immediately by the survivors’ walk.

Edwards said three different bands will perform during the course of the evening. Beginning at 3 p.m., she said, families are encouraged to attend performances by cloggers She Bang! and the University Showchoir.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Edwards said.

In addition to the Relay, the Troy University Relay Committee and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity will host a survivors’ lunch at noon March 31 at the Collegedale Church of Christ Fellowship Hall.
“We invite everyone to come out and join us as we celebrate life with those who have won their battle with cancer and remember those we have lost to this dreaded disease,” said Kay Franklin, a community representative with the American Cancer Society.

Admission to the event is $1, and food will be available for purchase. For more information visit our website at www.acsevents.org/relay/al/.
