TROY students earn information scholarships

PHENIX CITY – Two Troy University students majoring in information systems have earned $2,000 scholarships from the Society for Information Management.

The students, Mary B. Kilgore and James E. Jackson were each awarded $2,000 scholarships by the Alabama Chapter of SIM through proceeds provided by the organization’s annual golf tournament.

The scholarships were presented Oct. 17 during the SIM dinner meeting. The two were selected based on six criteria in a competitive awards process, said Jim Ryan, an assistant professor of information systems on the Phenix City Campus.

Kilgore, an 18-year veteran of WestPoint Home, is a Beulah native and the first in her family of four to obtain a college degree. She earned an associate’s degree in 1996 and is employed by WestPoint Home as a programmer analyst III. She plans to complete a bachelor’s degree in December 2008. In addition to her work and academic duties, Kilgore is active in Mothers Against Drunk Driving, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Jackson is retired from the U.S. Army, where he discovered his passion for computers. In 1994, he completed an associate’s degree at John C. Calhoun Community College in Huntsville while still in the Army. When he retired in 2004, he elected to continue his education and expects to complete a bachelor’s degree in Spring 2008. Jackson said he would likely continue his education in a master’s degree program with the eventual goal of educating adults who have a desire to learn about computers.
