TROY professor elected to national board

TROY – A Troy University professor has been elected to a one-year term on the board of directors of the national College Art Association.

Edward Noriega, a professor in the Department of Art and Design, was elected following the resignation from the board of artist-educator Coco Fusco in February.

Director of TROY’s Center for Design Technology and Industry, Noriega has lectured worldwide on design, color, technology, and economic development.

“Many universities around the world devote vast resources to producing the most and the best in science and technology, but few actually focus on creative thinking,” said Noriega. “These institutions miss a key truth — art and design are, and always have been, fundamental to social change and economic prosperity.”

Noriega graduated from Cooper Union in 1984 with a bachelor of fine arts. He has taught art and design and developed several curricula for nearly 20 years at Cooper Union, the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons School of Design.  He is also the coauthor of Design Fundamentals for the Digital Age.

The College Art Association supports those who join together to “cultivate the ongoing understanding of art as a fundamental form of human expression” (collegeart.org).  CAA strives to support scholarship, creativity, connoisseurship, criticism, and teaching.
