TROY – The John M. Long School of Music will play host to about 80 of the region’s most talented high school singers during the inaugural Southeastern United States High School Honor Choir Jan. 18 and 19.

Schools from Alabama, Georgia and Florida will send students to the weekend festival that will include two days of rehearsal and a final concert at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Claudia Crosby Theatre on the Troy Campus.

Wichita State University professor Dr. Tom Wine will be the guest clinician. Wine, also the university’s director of choral music, earned his doctorate at Florida State University, and has been a faculty member at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa Community College and was director of choral activities at Spartanburg High School, where he was a nominee for South Carolina Teacher of the Year in 1989.

High school seniors attending the festival will also have the opportunity to audition for Troy University voice and choral scholarships, said Dr. Michael Hix, assistance professor of voice and coordinator of vocal and choral activities.

“This event was created to recognize the regions most-talented high school singers,” he said. “It also gives them time to hone their skills through a weekend of instruction with Troy School of Music faculty and the guest clinician.”
