Leadership Conference Celebrating Black History Month

Feb. 1-2: The African-American Leadership Conference begins at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 1 with a keynote address by Richard Arrington, the first African-American mayor of Birmingham, in the Trojan Center Theater. Cynthia Tucker, editorial page editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a syndicated opinion columnist, will serve as the luncheon speaker to close the conference on Saturday, Feb. 2, beginning at 11:45 a.m. in the Trojan Center Ballrooms.

On Saturday, sessions begin at 8:15. Plenary sessions will be conducted from 8:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the Trojan Center Theater. Student sessions will be conducted in Room 101 of the General Academic Building during the same time slot.

High School SEUS

Jan. 31 – Feb. 2: More than 370 high school band members representing about 104 bands will take part in the 35th Annual Southeastern United States Concert Band Clinic and Honor Bands on the Troy Campus. Bandmasters Hall of Fame Induction

Feb. 2: At 12 p.m. in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor, the American Bandmasters Association will induct two members into its national Hall of Fame. A news release is available at: http://www.troy.edu/news/archives/2008/january/01292008_bandmasters.html.

 

Chancellor’s Southeast Asia mission

Feb. 19-29: Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr., accompanied by several key staff members, will travel to the Kingdom of Cambodia and Vietnam.

The purpose of the Cambodian visit is to sign a formal agreement of cooperation between TROY and Pannasastra University of Cambodia and to continue formal talks with Senior Minister of Education and Youth Services Dr. Kol Pheng. To schedule an interview with Chancellor Hawkins on this subject prior to his departure, please contact the University Relations Office.

During the trip, Dr. Hawkins will deliver the keynote address at commencement ceremonies at Vietnam National University and Hanoi University of Technology. It is the first such TROY commencement in the southeast Asian nation. Troy began its first degree programs in Vietnam six years ago. Almost 40 years ago to the month, Dr. Hawkins led a combat platoon of U.S. Marines into Vietnam. Dr. Earl Ingram, vice chancellor of University College, the branch of the University that oversees TROY’s  non-Alabama sites and eCampus, is also available by appointment for interview on the mission.
