TROY— A Troy University professor has performed in the International Clarinet Festival.
Dr. Timothy Phillips, assistant professor of music in the John M. Long School of Music attended the festival July 2-6 at the University of Missouri- Kansas City, Conservatory of Music.
At the festival, Phillips performed “Trinity” composed by Carl Vollrath, also a music faculty member at TROY. Phillips was accompanied by TROY piano instructor Hui’ Ting Yang and shared the stage with four other clarinetist that played 10 minute individual pieces.
"I was very excited to share my recital with other performers I greatly respect," said Phillips.
The International Clarinet Festival is hosted by the International Clarinet Association every summer in a different location around the world. Activities at the festival include: daily recitals, academic lectures, retail booths and information dealing with anything new in the clarinet music world. Phillips has attended the festival the past four years.
"It is the largest annual gathering of clarinetists in the world, and it is an excellent place to hear great, new works for the clarinet,” said Phillips. “Also, it’s a nice thing for TROY faculty members to perform at festivals, because it will bring good attention to TROY and our music school.”
Phillips, who now resides in Troy with his wife, Katrina, is from Independence, Missouri.
Phillips graduated from the University of Colorado-Boulder with an undergraduate degree in music education. He received his masters and doctorate degrees from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His wife, also a clarinet instructor at TROY, shares the same degree and alma mater with her husband and is currently pursuing a doctorate degree from Illinois.
