Join TROY and the Alabama Department of Archives and History for a Symposium on World War I

MONTGOMERY – Troy University and the Alabama Department of Archives and History invite teachers and the general public to attend Alabama and the “Great War: A Symposium on World War I.”

The two-day symposium is scheduled for July 25 and 26 in Montgomery. The Friday program for teachers will take place at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. Dr. James H. Meredith, president of the Ernest Hemingway Foundation and Society, will deliver the keynote address on war literature.

Also on Friday, a reception and birthday party for Zelda Fitzgerald is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. at the F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum. Zelda, a writer and artist who lived from 1900 to 1948, was married to Great Gatsby Author F. Scott Fitzgerald. The daughter of Judge Sayre of the Alabama Supreme Court, Zelda was the archetypal “Flapper” of the 1920s.

On Saturday, Troy University welcomes the Symposium to the Montgomery Campus for presentation sessions about the war, tours of war-related sites and a screening of “Company K,” based on William March’s novel.

Educators can earn CEUs by attending. The cost for teachers is $25 for Friday and $35 for both days. The general public will be charged $30 for the Fitzgerald reception and Saturday programs. For more information or to register, visit http://www.archives.alabama.gov/WW1Symposium/main.html.
