Students earn scholarships to TROY in Trumpet Competition

TROY, Ala. – Two high school students have earned scholarships to Troy University for their skill with the trumpet.

Leanna Reeves, a senior at Highland Home High School, was awarded a $2,500 per year scholarship to TROY, a $250 cash prize and her name inscribed on a plaque in Smith Hall for her performance of “Andante et Allegro” by Guy Ropartz.

Jenetta McGee, a senior at South Walton High School from Miramar Beach, Fla., earned a $1,500 per year scholarship for her performance of “Ode for Trumpet” by Alfred Reed.

Both students, who will attend TROY this fall and become members of the Sound of the South Marching Band, competed during the 8th Annual Troy University High School Solo Trumpet Competition March 27.

“We are all very pleased to have these outstanding trumpet students attend Troy University in the Fall. They represent a very bright future for our programs,” said Dr. Jim Zingara, an associate professor of music in the University’s John M. Long School of Music and an internationally recognized trumpet player.

The students were judged by Zingara and Mr. Michael F. Keeley, a former member of the U.S. Navy Band and an adjunct professor of trumpet at TROY.

“Leanna performed with great poise and with a very mature musical style and approach. She demonstrated very advanced musical skills in a winning performance,” Zingara said. “Jenetta performed with a beautiful, mature sound on a very challenging arrangement. Her grasp of technique and style are advanced for her age, and she will grow into a very accomplished player.”
