Press Release
November 17, 2008 Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum Celebrates Eighth Anniversary MONTGOMERY - Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum will celebrate its eighth anniversary with a special presentation by Doreen Griffin of Trenton, New Jersey on Dec. 1, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Museum’s auditorium. The presentation She’s Got a Ticket to Ride: An Interview with Mrs. Rosa Parks is the story of Rosa Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on the bus and a reminder that her example remains an inspiration to freedom-loving people everywhere. This presentation was created, written and co-produced by Anthony F. Miskowski, Executive Secretary of Communication Workers of America (CWA) Local 1033, and Assistant Curator of the New Jersey State Museum and Doreen Griffin, CWA Local 1033 Executive Board member and Representative for Law and Public Safety, Division of Law where she works as a Paralegal. The program was originally produced in 2006 to commemorate Black History Month and honor the legacy of Rosa Parks as a one-time performance for the CWA Committee on Equity. However, since its initial performance, it has been presented at various worksites of state government in Trenton, New Jersey; at the 2007 National Women’s convention in Washington DC; the West African Project, Inc. (a fund-raising event) in Langhorne, PA, to assist the children of Monrovia, Liberia, who are caught in the strife of a prolonged civil war; Orangeburg, South Carolina; and several churches and schools both in North and South Jersey. All performances are free of charge in the interest of educational and entertainment purposes. The program begins with a short PowerPoint presentation that places the Montgomery Bus Boycott in historical perspective and uses important Civil Rights cases prior to Dec. 1, 1955, when Mrs. Parks sat in the right place at the right time to become a world symbol of human and civil rights. Rosa Parks, as portrayed by Doreen Griffin, tells of the people and events through an interview accompanied by images important to the chronicles of her life. All information provided in this performance is factual and includes actual quotes and events of that pivotal time. The event is free and open to the public.
