Three honored with Sullivan Awards at Troy University

TROY—Troy University has honored two students and a member of the University’s faculty with the 2009 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards.
 
Seniors Cody Ash of Troy and Kristina Vise of Trussville and Barbara Patterson, director of student involvement/leadership were presented the awards during a luncheon on the Troy Campus on Monday. The recipients also were honored during the University’s annual Honors Convocation Monday night.
 
The Sullivan Award, which is presented at select colleges and universities throughout the United States, recognizes recipients for their excellence of character, humanitarian service and spiritual qualities. The award has been presented annually to a male student, a female student and one non-student at TROY since 1981. Students, faculty and staff nominate candidates for the award.
 
Ash, the son of Chuck and Marylyn Ash of Troy, is a member of the Student Government Association, Farmhouse Fraternity and the Trojan Ambassadors. He has served as SGA vice president of campus activities, as a Troy University IMPACT orientation leader, was a member of Freshman Forum and was named Freshman Forum’s Man of the Year. He is a member of First Baptist Church in Troy and has been a volunteer for the Special Olympics, Relay for Life, the Adopt-A-Mile Program and the YMCA Youth Legislature Program. He is a past recipient of the Tip Colley Christian Athlete Award.
 
Vise, the daughter of Don and Sarah Vise, is president of the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society, the Newman Center Catholic Organization and Students for Life, a campus organization she founded in 2007 for which she also serves as pregnancy center coordinator. She is also a guest speaker and retreat leader for the Holy Infant of Prague youth group and has volunteered for the Women’s Life Center. She works as a tutor at the campus Writing Center, is an intern for the Alabama Literary Review and is copy editor for Tropolitan, TROY’s student newspaper. She is a Millennium Scholarship recipient and has received the Sigma Tau Delta Award, the Bernard E. Williams Award and was the ACETA 2009 Mary McMillian Undergraduate Writing Award runner-up.
 
Patterson serves as advisor to several campus organizations including the SGA, the Pan-Hellenic Council, the Order of Omega, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Newman Center and GAMMA. She is a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Troy, has served as Eucharistic Minister and was a former Parish Council member. She has also served on the board of the Troy-Pike Habitat for Humanity.
