Troy University to have annual insurance symposium

TROY – Troy University’s Risk Management and Insurance Program will host the 15th annual Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Education Foundation Excess and Surplus Lines Symposium Nov. 20-21 in Birmingham.

The event, which will be conducted at the Embassy Suites Hotel, will involve some 80 students from 11 universities. In addition to the students and their professors, the symposium is open to industry executives looking for insurance students to hire and industry professionals seeking continuing education credit. Eight hours of Alabama Continuing Education credit is offered.

On Friday, the symposium’s third-annual Career Fair will highlight the activities. Among companies being represented are:

On Saturday, the symposiums educational sessions include presentations by:

  • Pat Talley, president of Lloyd’s Kentucky,
  • Richard Bouhan, executive director, National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices,
  • Marcus Payne, vice president of All Risks, Ltd.,
  • Greg Rubel, president of Markel Midsouth,
  • Phil Adams, of MacDuff Underwriters and
  • Brittany Thompson, an associate underwriter for RLI and Troy University alumna.

“The symposium has several purposes,” said Dr. Carol Jordan, eminent scholar in risk management and insurance at TROY. “It allows TROY students to interact with insurance students from other schools and it introduces business students to insurance topics that are relevant but not generally covered in the classroom.”

The symposium also exposes students to industry executives, which opens the way for students to find internships and jobs.
