November 12 2009 Chinese dance and arts troupe to perform for Dothan City Schools students DOTHAN—More than 150 Dothan City Schools students will attend a performance of traditional Chinese dance and music at Troy University’s Dothan Campus on Friday, Nov. 20.The Dance and Arts Troupe of Hebei Normal University of Science and Technology will travel to the Dothan Campus to give a performance of traditional folk dances, music and martial arts demonstrations. The event is sponsored by the Confucius Institute at Troy University and is being offered at no cost to the Dothan City Schools. “The Dothan Campus is proud to host this outstanding and rare opportunity for the students in Dothan City Schools to participate in a culturally enriching experience,” said Gayla White, director of development. The Dance and Arts Troupe is made up of students and teachers at Hebei Normal University of Science Technology. The university is located in the Hebei Province of the People’s Republic of China and has more than 30,000 students. The group will perform for an audience of middle school and high school drama and choral students. The performance will start at 10 a.m. inside Sony Hall, located in the Library Technology Building. “The troupe will share traditional Chinese costumes, customs and stories through the performances,” said Dr. Iris Hong Xu, director of the Confucius Institute at TROY. “They also hope to reach all members of the community about this part of the Chinese culture.” The Confucius Institute at TROY is part of a global network of more than 204 Confucius Institutes in 50 countries dedicated to the promotion and development of Chinese language education, and cultural and business exchange with the People’s Republic of China.
