TROY -- Troy University’s GAMMA chapter is promoting alcohol responsibility to students through National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week.

GAMMA (Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol) is holding a week full of activities to encourage students to act responsibly during the upcoming fall break.

Sarah Dole, GAMMA President, said that their main goal is to educate the students about driving under the influence of alcohol.

“We want the students to know they are not invincible,” said Dole, “and to act responsibly when they decide to drink.”

The group, partnering with the Resident Hall Association on Monday held a “Mocktail Party,” where they served non-alcoholic drinks and informed students of the effects of alcohol. Students were also able to win several door prizes.

On Wednesday, motivational speaker and Indiana University professor Dr. Gary Sailes delivered an address to students in the Claudia Crosby Theatre, focusing on accountability, ethical behavior and safety. In addition, GAMMA will have a table set up in the Trojan Center throughout the week with information about alcohol responsibility.

Alcohol is a part of the college culture on campuses where it is permitted, said Dean of Students Herb Reeves.

“Most colleges face the issues of under-age drinking irresponsible drinking,” he said. “It’s crucial that these issues are brought to the forefront for our students and the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week helps accomplish that.”

On the Troy Campus, two of the University’s 12 fraternities have a no-alcohol policy, and Reeves said the University routinely holds awareness activities each semester to encourage the responsible use of alcohol and the consequences of alcohol abuse.

“Many of these activities demonstrate alternatives to alcohol use,” he said.
