TROY—Troy University will salute the men and women of the armed forced during the Trojans’ Nov. 27 football game against Western Kentucky at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff for the game is set for 2:30 p.m.
Since 2000, the University has honored both current and past members of the armed forces at one home football game each November as a Veterans Day tribute. This year, a special invitation was issued to active-duty military personnel at Fort Rucker, Fort Benning and Maxwell Air Force Base. Complimentary tickets were made available upon request.
Troy University First Lady Janice Hawkins, who chairs the University’s ongoing “TROY for Troops” effort to honor and support military men and women who are in harm’s way, said the Nov. 27 tribute is another way in which the University and the local community can acknowledge the sacrifice made by service members.
“Troy University has enjoyed a long relationship with the military, and we believe it is vitally important to continue to express our gratitude to the men and women of the armed forces for their dedicated, selfless service to our country,” Mrs. Hawkins said. “Over the last several years, we have become accustomed to the deployments of our military men and women into areas of great conflict. These men and women need and deserve our continued support and appreciation.”
Pre-game festivities will include the presentation of the colors by the University’s Air Force ROTC unit. In addition, the University will recognize those wounded in wartime through the Wounded Warrior Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at assisting those men and women of the armed forces who have been severely injured in Iraq, Afghanistan and other locations around the world. A wounded warrior representative will be on hand for the pre-game coin flip.
At halftime, the Sound of the South marching band will provide a special salute, including the performance of the service song for each branch of the military. All veterans, active duty and reserves and their family members will be recognized as they parade across the field during the performance of their service song.
Active duty service members with valid military ID will receive a complimentary ticket. Any military family member or veteran with a valid military ID may purchase a discounted ticket for $8 at Gate 1 on the day of the game.
In addition, a special “TROY for Troops” car magnet and the University’s “TROY for Troops” Christmas ornament will be available for purchase at the TROY Alumni House, located across from the stadium on the corner of George Wallace Drive and Highland Avenue, prior to the game. Magnets are $5 and the Christmas ornament is $20. For additional information on these items, contact the Office of Alumni Affairs at 334-670-3318.
